Don’t Move or the Reef Gets it!

The coral bleaching event taking place in northern parts of the Barrier Reef provides another example of how we’re not being given the whole story when it comes to anything climate change related.

As you’ll soon see, this is yet another climate change story with plenty of emotion, funny numbers, nonsensical comparisons, a ‘worst ever’ proclamation… and several missing key facts.

Sometimes, the Truth Hits You in the Face

Normal people tend to avoid towns like Rinkeby (which has an immigrant concentration of around 89% and a strong history of violence) for safety reasons. The silly and naive go there unsupervised. Meanwhile, the crew at 60 Minutes, along with the suicidal and death-incarnate, plough in there head first and stay even when the local police refuse to stick around.

Can Every Cyclone be the ‘Worst Ever’?

Why would large chunks of the media want to recklessly mislead us about Cyclone Winston’s ranking in the pantheon of cyclones?

Worst ever!

It all started when I read the headline ‘worst storm on record’ on news.com.au (at 15:08 on Saturday, 20 February 2016 – before Cyclone Winston had even hit Fiji):

At Least WA Has Something to Show for it’s Debt

Emily Moulton of news.com.au asks whether WA squandered its ‘mining riches’:

IT HAS been billed as a once in lifetime boom, one that brought unprecedented riches to the ‘wild west’. But what has Western Australia actually got to show for the mining boom?

For many years, WA was long been regarded as the poor, long-distance cousin, the one you saw at family get-togethers but never really paid much attention to.

Aside from demonstrating her sheer ignorance to a whole state of people and the contribution they have made to our country (17% of national GDP in 2013-14), Continue reading “At Least WA Has Something to Show for it’s Debt”

Scaffidi Digs in – Paul Murray Mysteriously Defends Her

Scaffidi digs a deeper hole and attempts Julia Gillard’s ‘young and naive’ defence:

A defiant Ms Scaffidi was last night digging in, rejecting the CCC’s finding she had “signally failed in her duties as lord mayor” and blaming her actions on inexperience and advice from others.

Refugee Advocate – Nauru an ‘Island Gulag’

Nauru has announced that it will end the detention of 600 asylum seekers it is holding.

Not only is this not good enough for Ian Rintoul of the Refugee Action Coalition, but he has also decided to level this unprovoked broadside at the good people of Nauru while he is at it:

Turnbull Leaves the Door Open to Climate Policy ‘Tweak’

I’ve noticed lately that Turnbull loves to use the word ‘agile’. This time, he has used the word to describe his intended approach to climate change policy:
